Outlander on STARZ Premiere – Comic Con 2014

Outlander on STARZ Premiere – Comic Con 2014

Outlander on Starz

Thousands descended on San Diego last week for Comic Con 2014, including a few hundred #Outlanders there to see the world premiere of Outlander on STARZ.

I was invited along by another big fan, Karli, who generously offered her “plus one” ticket to me. We spent the weekend with 6 other fabulous women in a house in the Hillcrest district of SD.

None of us had ever met in person, but as I’ve learned before on previous Outlander-related trips, when you travel to meet other fans of Diana Gabaldon’s epic tale of love and adventure, you’re sure to meet a group of like-minded women all up for a good time.

The Outlander Boys - Comic Con 2014

We started off the day of the premiere with a visit to the Convention Centre. We didn’t have tickets to get inside, but what does that matter when we were lucky enough to come across this group of kilted “Highlanders?”

piper

Those handsome men were accompanied by some beautiful female pipers who played with all their might to keep up the enthusiasm. You’ll find a video of them belting it out on Outlander Kitchen’s new Youtube channel.

Then it was time to get back to the house and gussy ourselves up for our walk up the Plaid Carpet on the way into Spreckels Theater, the venue for the big premiere!

Nettles

We gathered in our seats and waited while the stars were interviewed on their way in. Most of you know I can’t resist any chance to plug my love of nettles as food, so I had to snap a pic when they came up on the screen. You can sting yourself to soothe arthritis if you want, but I’ll use mine to make a batch of Claire’s Nettle-Kissed Buns.

Pipers at the Outlander on Starz Premiere

Then it was time for the Outlander on Starz premiere to begin! Those beautiful pipers were back again, this time in their formal evening attire.

We were treated to even more music by Outlander theme composer Bear McCreary, fiddler Paul Cartright and vocalist Raya Yarbrough. I managed to capture all but the first 2 seconds on video…I highly recommend sitting back and taking 11 minutes to listen.Β  Everyone in the audience was blown away.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTzV-UmUAsI]

I don’t want to say too much about the first episode, ’cause I’m a very anti-spoiler kind of girl, but I feel safe in saying that Outlander book fans won’t be disappointed.

It was everything I hoped for. There are some new scenes, a few that are a little different, and some that are gone altogether, but the passion, drama and humour are all there. I fell in love with the story all over again. I can’t wait for more, and for everyone else to see it! You may have a wee bone to pick here and there, but in real life, you’ve got nothing but to be happy.

Outlander on Starz Premiere Comic-Con-Panel2

After the show, we were treated to a Q&A session some of the cast, Diana and Ron Moore. It had been a long day for all of them, being dragged to event after event, but they were all still on form, throwing jokes and light-hearted volleys back and forth to keep the audience laughing.

It was a day and night I’ll never forget, and I feel so grateful to have shared it with so many other fans.

Outlander on STARZ premieres on August 9, 2014 at 9PM ET. An in-advance online full-episode preview ill be available online at STARZ.com/Outlander.

I’m looking forward to when Jamie comforts Claire when she loses it trying to come to terms with what’s happened to her and if her husband is dead (or not!)

After that, I’m *really* looking forward to the wedding! πŸ™‚

The scene I am most looking forward to seeing is the wedding night. To be more precise, the time before the bedding when Jamie and Claire talk and really open up to each other! Sigh!

Apart from the wedding (a given) I think the scene where Jamie takes Claire to the Stones – knowing that by giving her the choice, she may well leave him – and when she returns to him, finding that he’s been weeping. So emotive

The fight with Claire and Jamie after Forth William

When Jamie tells Claire he is a virgin.

Theresa, I am most looking forward to Claire bringing Jamie back from the brink at the Abbey. That scene cemented for me her real and full love of and for him. (And, if course, Jamie escapes through the window naked shortly thereafter!)

I am also looking forward to Drunk Claire the night before her wedding.

I can’t wait for the witch trial scene when they are in the water getting tested and Jamie swoops in to save Claire! Then they go off and Claire tells Jamie that she is from the future!

Thanks for the great pictures, I’m so glad you were able to attend! The scene I am most looking forward to seeing…. That’s a tough one. Of cours the wedding πŸ™‚ but I am really interested to see how they handle Claire going through the stones.

    July 28, 2014 at 5:26 am

The scene I’m most looking forward to is when Column and Claire meet in his solar. The battle of the wits, as it were. Also, the wedding ;).

oh the scene where Frank “sees” the highlander ghost and Claire heading through the stones!

I think from the first book the scene I am most excited to see would be when Jamie tries to send Claire back thru the stones and the aftermath. Oh, and Claire showing up on McRannoch s doorstep in a snow storm….

The scene I’m looking forward the most in seeing is the fight after Jaime rescues Claire from BJR.

I want to see Claire wandering thru the castle to orient herself, so I can see it thru her eyes. Likewise I want to see the grounds, fields and outbuildings so I can really feel the surroundings.

Have really enjoyed seeing your view of SDCC!!! I’m excited to be attending the NY Premier tonight!!! There are a few scenes i’m looking forward to seeing, but first on my list is the wedding (ceremony & night). Close seconds are Claire’s journey through the stones, and the flogging.

  9. Susanne
    July 28, 2014 at 5:41 am

    Thanks for the pictures!
I’m – of course – looking forward to the wedding night but what I most want to see is the episode at the abbey. So I’ll have to curb my curiosity even longer for the last episodes of the second half of the first season… God, please grant me patience. Now!

Too many awesome scenes to pick just one! I will say the wedding and witch trial!

I hate to be trite, but THE WEDDING!

  13. Bullrem
    July 28, 2014 at 5:48 am

The scenes I do not want to see are the flogging and later at Wentworth the rape by BJR. The scene I suppose that I might really look forward to is when Jamie tries to send Clarie back through the stones. This is where is finally realizes what and who she is and loves her the more for choosing him and she that also for him.

    July 28, 2014 at 5:50 am

The scene I’m most looking forward to has to be Jamie and Claire first meet. It’ll set the tone for the whole episode. I am also looking forward to seeing how Claire going thru the stones is treated – hopefully no black and white twirling hypnotist’s device! Just kidding! I’m sure it will be quite well done.

  15. Liza Ahern
    July 28, 2014 at 5:52 am

I think definitely Claire’s first encounter with Black Jack Randall.

Trying so hard not to be jealous, Theresa!!! I’m looking forward to Jamie’s physical swordplay and then the verbal swordplay between him and Claire. And, of course, the making up!

  19. Barbie Roberts
    July 28, 2014 at 6:28 am

Theresa, I’m so happy you were able to attend the premiere! Thanks for not giving any spoilers on the show. I’m looking forward to seeing ALL of it, but the one scene(s) I think I’m really looking forward to is the aftermath of Jamie rescuing Claire from Ft. William and BJR. The fight they have on the side of the road and the spanking he gives her later promise to be full of sparks and spirit.

  20. Becky
    July 28, 2014 at 6:29 am

I am most looking forward to the wedding scene of Jamie and Claire because of the scene itself, but also because of the costumes!

  21. Rhiannon McVean
    July 28, 2014 at 6:29 am

I am rereading Outlander right now in anticipation of the show.(third time) The scene I am most looking forward to seeing is when Jamie takes Claire back to the stones so she can go back to her time. I can’t wait to see those intense emotions played out on screen.
    Pick me! Pick me! πŸ™‚

  22. Rossana Malvani
    July 28, 2014 at 6:35 am

It’ hard to choose a single scene! I think that the wedding first night is the scene that I’m thrilled to see! Thank you for the chance to win! Hugs from Italy!

  23. Anne marie froment
    July 28, 2014 at 6:38 am

My favourite scene is when Claire decides to stay with Jamie instead of going back to Frank. I find it very emotional and I am looking forward to see Sam’ s and Cait’s interpretation of it.

    July 28, 2014 at 6:39 am

Wow! To pick one scene…there are many, I’m excited to see them ALL! Let’s see, I think it will be cool to see Claire and Jenny build their friendship and to become sisters. To see their strength together while searching for Jamie.
All of Diana’s wonderful scenes depicting strong independent women in the face of the difficulties of the time.

  26. Barbara Howell
    July 28, 2014 at 6:43 am

Of course i want to see the wedding & night but i am looking forward to seeing how they handle the scene involving “Claire’s punishment “

  28. Heather
    July 28, 2014 at 6:45 am

Easy. The same scene DG wants to see. When Jamie is raped and tortured by BJR. Sick, I know. But it’s going to be so good!

Btw, if I should win, the prize will go to a friend who was instrumental in getting Emulsion to our state but was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital a day or 2 before the premiere. She is getting better. πŸ™‚

Of course looking forward to the wedding. I hope they do the blood bond part. But also looking forward to when Jamie takes Claire back to the stones and she chooses to stay with him.

  29. Jamie Campbell

  39. Karen

Trying to pick one scene is akin to the reaction to “which is your favorite child”. I’d have to say especially keen to see the Gathering at Castle Leoch. And the wedding, of course.

  45. Ericaceae
    July 28, 2014 at 7:31 am

I am looking forward to the wedding, of course, but also the conversation with Claire, Jamie, and Dougal that leads up to the wedding and Claire having a wee bit too much to drink!

    July 28, 2014 at 7:31 am

I’ve always been partial to the “Pillory” scene. While they were definitely friendly before, I just loved the little plan they plotted together! (the first of many) and that it was Jamie’s first affectionate use of “Sassenach”
I think that might be switched up a little for the show (“No promises Sassenach!”- but I hope it’s still there in some way, shape or form! πŸ™‚

  54. Branwyn
    July 28, 2014 at 7:56 am

I’m most looking forward the wedding. I absolutely can not wait to see all the preparation and fight she puts up before being swept off her feet by a breathtaking young highlander.

  55. Elaine Bondra
    July 28, 2014 at 8:10 am

More than anything, I just really want to SEE the people & places and to HEAR the voices that I’ve carried around in my head for such a long time. If I have to pick one scene, it would be when Claire tells Jamie about her “dead” husband and he pulls her onto his lap to comfort her when she loses it. He later says it was the moment he fell in love with her.

    • Mary
      July 28, 2014 at 8:18 am

  56. Sharon Thackston
    July 28, 2014 at 8:15 am

So hard to pick out just one thing, there are so many that I can’t wait to see how they handle. Claire going through the stones, the wedding, the wedding night, the whippings, Frank seeing Jamie’s “ghost” watching Claire, etc. This series will be dynamite especially since it’s filmed in Scotland and the Highlands, the scenery will play as big of a part as the cast.

  57. Mary
    July 28, 2014 at 8:15 am

I’m looking forward to when Claire makes her decision at the stones and runs back to Jamie at the cottage. Oh, the feels!

    July 28, 2014 at 8:16 am

I’m really looking forward to when Jamie takes Claire back to the stones and puts her hand on it and she starts to fade and he pulls her away. I’ve got chills just thinking about it. There are SO many scenes I can’t wait to see!!

  59. Shanah

So many to look forward to! The wedding of course, Claire deciding to stay with Jamie. And Lollybrock, I am interested to see if it fits the picture I have in my head.

  62. Catherine L
    July 28, 2014 at 8:26 am

I’m really looking forward to when Jamie and Claire first meet, as well as the wedding scene where Claire faints. I also can’t wait to see the scene where Claire fights the wolf – the pure desperation and strength in that scene should be amazing to see.

  63. Lynn Bischoff
    July 28, 2014 at 8:26 am

I’m looking forward to seeing the life at Lallybroch, with Jenny and Ian. Especially the first scene with Jamie’s return and Jenny.

I want to see when Claire first meets Jamie, then the wedding.

  65. Candy McAuliffe
    July 28, 2014 at 8:29 am

The scene I want to see is when C and J get to Lollybroch and Jamie and Jenny have their huge yelling match and Claire and Ian sit outside listening and chatting. Love that scene!

  66. Sandy
    July 28, 2014 at 8:32 am

I am most looking forward to the scene when Jamie visits Claire in the late Beaton’s surgery. Also, I just look forward to experiencing the chemistry between Claire and Jamie, and the rest of the characters. Oh, I think the reaction of Claire (her face) when Jamie stands in for Loaghaire’s punishment. Geez, who am I kidding…there are too many “scenes” that I cannot wait to see. I know I am not going to be disappointed.

  67. Nicole S.
    July 28, 2014 at 8:35 am

  68. Paige Carroll
    July 28, 2014 at 8:36 am

There are so many scenes I am looking forward to….it is hard to narrow it down! The return to Lallybroch will be high on the list along with the wedding night, of course! But I also look forward to seeing Claire fight to free Jamie from Wentworth….wolves, cows, Oh! My!
Thanks for having the giveaway and sharing your “swag” with the fans!

I am really looking forward to claire &jamie reunion when she does not go through the stones then they set of for lallybroch

  71. Nicole Z
    July 28, 2014 at 8:42 am

It’s impossible to pick just one scene that I’m looking forward to seeing, but because this is a book-to-screen adaptation I know I’m looking forward to seeing how they have interpreted how the stones work, and how we’ll experience what Claire is feeling.

  72. Mary Beth
    July 28, 2014 at 8:44 am

I’m actually looking forward to seeing Claire and Murtagh singing their way across the countryside to find out where the English have taken Jamie. And Jamie saving Claire from BJR, Claire saving Jamie from BJR, and Claire fighting to help Jamie survive his abuse and save his soul at the Abbey.

  73. Susan
    July 28, 2014 at 8:46 am

The scene I am most looking forward to seeing is the day after the wedding when Jamie and Claire take the walk together and they have to relate to each other in a new way in the light of day after their wedding night.

  74. Saskia
    July 28, 2014 at 8:47 am

Of course I really look forward to the wedding, but I’d love to see the scene when Jamie and Claire finally return to Lallybroch! πŸ™‚

  75. Allison

Definitely the wedding scene. Going through the stones and Claire meeting Jack Randall. There are too many to mention. All of it!!!

  76. Karen Nutter
    July 28, 2014 at 8:51 am

I can’t wait to see the wedding! I’m sure the costumes will be amazing. Ok. And the wedding night!

  77. Beth Euchler
    July 28, 2014 at 8:54 am

I’m looking forward to the scene where Claire tells Jamie what she is and he says, “It would have been easier if you were a witch.”

  78. Kristine Phillips
    July 28, 2014 at 8:56 am

I’m looking forward to all of it, but I think, top of my list is the ride to Castle Leoch where Jamie and Claire share a horse and first become intimate with each other.

  79. JoAnn
    July 28, 2014 at 8:56 am

I want to see the moment that made me give my heart and soul to these books: When Jamie and Claire are riding to Leoch and she berates him for moving his arm, and he tells her he was just getting his plaid to wrap around her because she was shivering. I totally lost it then! (But I want to see all the other scenes too!)

  80. Shannon
    July 28, 2014 at 8:56 am

I am looking forward to the wedding night. And other nights as Jamie becomes more experienced. πŸ˜‰ And when Claire & Jamie go back to Lallybroch & meet Jenny & Ian. Sorry that’s not just one…

  81. Beverly Walters
    July 28, 2014 at 9:00 am

I want to see the scene at Lallybroch when Jaime tells Claire why he married her. It has such passion and humor. Having read and pictured it so many times I can’t wait to see Sam and Cait play with that one. It is just a ripping good scene.

  82. Anna Lapping
    July 28, 2014 at 9:01 am

I’m of course looking forward to the Wedding Scene, but also excited to see all the costumes in the scenes when they’re in the castle, and in France. I’m sure they will be fantastic.

  83. Jen
    July 28, 2014 at 9:02 am

So many scenes to choose from… I’d have to say Jamie & Claire’s first REAL kiss (the steamy one we’ve heard about). And of course, the wedding night (those 2 scenes could be one in the same?).

β€œI said I was a virgin, not a monk,” he said, kissing me again. β€œIf I find I need guidance, I’ll ask.” πŸ˜‰

  84. SueV

The scene at dinner at Leoch when Jamie explains, to the vast amusement of the castle residents, his previous encounter at age 16 with the Duke of Sandringham. It so perfectly highlights his self-deprecating sense of humor while subtly emphasizing his cleverness and the beginnings of his razor-sharp political savvy. Also the leader who is willing to share such an embarrasing moment publicly — and so entertainingly as well — will quickly earn the respect and admiration of those whom he leads, especially among fighters (speaking from personal experience in the military). Lucky for Colum and Dougal, Jamie had no designs on the leadership of Clan MacKenzie!

Thanks so much for your generosity in sharing with all of us, not nearly as good as being there, but as close as it gets for those of us who couldn’t attend. I am most looking forward to the scenes at the Abby where Claire “brings Jamie back” after he has given up all hope of ever reclaiming his soul from Black Jack Randall; when at the end, she clutches him, weeping, to her breast and he asks, “Mother?” in the voice of a young boy. Oh, the lengths to which we women will go to heal our men!

Hi T it was so good to meet you in person. I can’t for him to rescue her from the trial and taking her to the stones and then to Lallybroch. To me that’s when they are united she had a choice and code Jamie.

Jamie and Claire’s first kiss. They were so cute at CCSD when asked about it, I am sure it is going to be a changing moment for them.

    July 28, 2014 at 9:20 am

It’s so hard to pick one scene over the entire book! I think the most interesting scenes will be of Claire trying to figure out where & when she is, and whom she can trust – her internal struggles with the entire situation and her determination to get back to Frank. Then watching her change as she grows to love Jamie, ultimately deciding to stay when she reaches the stones.
I am also looking forward to every shot of Scotland, and all the fabulous costumes!

I am most looking forward to the after Wentworth scene at Sir Marcus’s house. When Claire is doing an inventory of Jamie’s hand injuries and keeps apologizing for hurting him and he tells her if she keeps that up it’s going to be a long night and then puts the piece of leather in his mouth and crosses his eyes at her and she busts out laughing, but because only Sir Marcus can see, the rest of the room is completely appalled.

I most most looking forward to seeing Claire at her BAD-ASS BEST when she is fighting the wolves and rescuing Jamie from Wentworth. She is the heart of this story, I’m looking forward to seeing a smart, capable woman taking charge of her own destiny. Not much of that happens on television these days.

The scene I’m interested in is when Dougal takes Claire to the Saint’s pool and describes Jamie’s floggings. It spoke so deeply to Jamie’s bravery, strength, and depth of his character. It touched my heart. I also felt that for all Dougal’s gruffness, it was high praise coming from him.

    • Elaine Bondra
      July 28, 2014 at 9:41 am

I suspect that since the clips show Jamie actually being flogged, we may not see the scene where Dougal describes it to Claire, or at least not as it is written in the book. I do like the book scene a lot, but this may be one time when “adapted for tv” means a change from the original.

Seriously looking forward to every freaken second of it but in particular the scene involving Jamie’s having to spank Claire for having disobeyed him. Can’t wait to see how they portray this scene and of course all the ribbing she will endure following this. Needless to say the ensuing make-up, make-out session will set our hearts on fire. The scene that I’m looking forward to seeing is when Claire and Jamie are reunited and he learns that Claire has named their child after his father-Brian, ‘Brianna’! And I think, correct me if I’m wrong, but Jamie actually sheds a tear when he learns about their daughter. Didn’t he say that he sensed her or something? So happy that you were able to be in San Diego! It looks like it was a blast! Scanning all these posts was like reviewing the book all over again; however, Claire’s going through the stones initally and her first reactions to what she sees upon arriving in the 18th century is at the top of my list. It sets the whole story in motion.

I am looking forward to seeing the relationship between Claire & Jamie progress from friendship to love and then, of course, the wedding night. It is said the Fifty Shades of Grey’s sex scenes have heated up sex lives, but I dare say (having read both book series), that the relationship between Claire & Jamie is way hotter and much more intimate than Fifty Shades. And it has heated up my own bedroom quite nicely! πŸ˜‰

Wonderful pictures, and great article! Wish I could have been there. The scene I am most looking forward to takes place in the Abbey in France, where Claire “exorcises” Jamie’s emotional demons after his abuse at the hands of Black Jack Randall. Happily I will have all season to anticipate this scene, since it is so near the end of the book.

I am looking forward to the scene between Jamie & Jenny at Lallybroach when they are fighting & she gets his attention. I love the relationships between Jamie, Claire, Jenny & Ian Sr.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m looking forward to Claire breaking Jamie out of Wentworth Prison – her stamina, her courage, her determination. I think Caitriona will be wonderful!

    July 29, 2014 at 7:47 am

Assuming I get to see the series one day on UK TV, I most want to see the scene when Claire goes rushing down the hill, having decided to not go through the stones, and finds Jamie asleep, curls up beside him then he wakes to find she’s chosen to stay with him.

I am most looking forward to when Jamie gives Claire the opportunity to go back to her own time at the stones and then she goes to Jamie instead. I honestly can’t wait for the whole thing!

I’m looking forward to seeing Jamie and Jenny reunite at Lallybroch when he and Claire arrive. I don’t have siblings and I am fascinated by their relationship.

The scene I am most looking forward to has to be the wedding night. The first time Jamie and Claire…ahem…get to really know one another.

I am really looking forward to all of them, but the one scene that stands out for me is when Jamie returns home and the fight between him and Jenny.

Besides the wedding episode, the scene where Jamie & Claire return to Castle Leoch after wedding/rent collections & get into a fight over Leghair….and the making up afterwards. ;0)

    July 29, 2014 at 12:34 pm

I was in San Diego too, but left on the Thursday before Comic-Con!! Poor planning on my part….One scene out of so many?? The Abby scenes, when Claire heals Jamie, and how far she goes to do so…very raw emotions there. But wouldn’t we all do what we must, to save the ones we love?

  192. Elaine Petit
    July 29, 2014 at 12:34 pm

I’d love to see the scene where Jamie and Claire are returning to lallybroch on Donas. The highlands where they camped, Lochs and Forrest scenery should be beautiful plus Jamie was so gentle with Claire.
Then The “battle” with Jenny when they arrive.

    July 29, 2014 at 12:40 pm

Perhaps unoriginal and said over and over again – but I truly want to see everything just prior to and including the wedding scene. I think that the lead in was one of my favorite things in the book!

I’m actually really looking forward to seeing Leoch. I’ve pictured so much of the book in my head over the years but somehow never quite “got” how a castle like that functioned in that time. And I got the impression that Herself’s appearance will be at Leoch.

This is so cliche, but the wedding night. Truly, such a beautiful moment in the book <3

    July 30, 2014 at 4:27 am

With so many awesome scenarios in Outlander, the one I’m most looking forward to is when Jaime takes Claire back to the stones, insisting, out of his own selfless love, that she return to the safety of her own time. It is then, while there alone, that Claire realizes that she truly loves Jaime and rushes to the cottage, to find him asleep! I feel this is one of the most pivotal scenes in the story, when Claire discovers she loves Jaime more than she loves Frank or the comforts of her own time and chooses to stay with him! ❀️

I’m looking forward to the pre wedding scene when Claire over indulges and has to be coaxed to get ready. Also Jamie gets her a wedding dress and that’s so sweet. Finally the wedding scene and the consummation. I love that he understands she needs to get ready and how he suggests they just touch and talk until they are comfortable enough. Then it’s magic and beautiful!

Hard to pick just one, but I’m anxious to see Jamie and Jenny going nuts on each other when Jamie returns home for the first time to introduce his wife. A strong woman tearing at her dumb brother – that’s real life!!

At Craig na dun when Claire goes back down the hill and is reunited with Jamie rather than going back through the stones to Frank, I find that one of the most emotional scenes in the book.

I’m looking forward to so much that it’s hard to decide. If I could narrow it down, I’m looking forward to the spanking. I know it’s controversial, but it was appropriate to the time. With people chiming in iwth their 21st century attitudes, it’s sure to stir up debate. I want to see how the writers and director have handled it.
Oh! And I’m looking forward to the aftermath. πŸ˜‰

IMy favorite is the scene with Jamie, Claire and Hamish In the horse barn when Jamie explains details of the facts of life to Hamish while Claire is suppressing her laughter in the loft. It’s my absolute favorite & that portion of my copy is coming apart there.

There are so many pick from…. One we have seen already, Jamie’s ghost… One I think important is the conversation between Jamie and Claire after they are married , where they agree they don’t have to tell each other everything, but there is no room or lies. It is important and I hope they take care to shoot it with the importance it calls for.

From the first book? So many choices and many people have echoed my thoughts… Obvious scenes… In no particular order, Wedding, return to Lallybroch, escape from ardsmuir, being taught to use a knife!

I think the witch trial will be thrilling.

I really am looking forward to the each wedding in the tropics with the drunken priest, when we get there!!!
