Princess Louisa’s Raspberries, Brandy & Cream for Valentine’s Day from Lord John and the Succubus

Grey felt momentarily as though he had received an actual blow to the pit of the stomach; his mouth opened, but he was incapable of speech.  Or at least he thought he was.  To his surprise, he heard his own voice, sounding calm, politely admiring.

“They are very handsome indeed.  I am sure they are a consolation to your wife, in your absence.”

Von Namtzen grimaced slightly, and gave a brief shrug.

“Their mother is dead.  She died in childbirth when Elise was born.”  A huge forefinger touched the tiny face, very gently.  “My mother looks after them.”

Grey made the proper sounds of condolence, but had ceased to hear himself, for the confusion of thought and speculation that filled his mind.

So much so, in fact, that when the princess’s special dessert – and enormous concoction of raspberries, brandy, sugar and cream — arrived, he ate it all, despite the fact that raspberries made him itch.

Outlander Thanksgiving – A Recipe Twist and Ideas for Your Holiday Table

My thoughts of luxuriant wallowing were interrupted by the emergence from the woods of Ian and Myers, the latter with a brace of squirrels hung from his belt.  Ian proudly presented me with an enormous black object, which on closer inspection proved to be a turkey, fat from gorging on the autumn grains.

“Boy’s got a nice eye, Mrs. Claire,” said Myers, nodding approvingly.  “Those be wily birds, turkeys.  Even the Indians don’t take ‘em easy.”

It was early for Thanksgiving, but I was delighted with the bird, which would be the first substantial item in our larder.  So was Jamie, though his pleasure lay more in the thing’s tail feathers, which would provide him with a good supply of quills.

Dougal’s Poached Peach Sundae

“So you did it with Colum’s knowledge.  Was Letitia willing?” Knowing by now just what sort of ruthlessness they possessed, I wouldn’t put it past the brothers MacKenzie to have forced her.

Dougal nodded.  His anger had evaporated.

“Oh, aye, willing enough.  She didna fancy me particularly, but she wanted a child – enough to take me to her bed for the three months it took to start Hamish.  A boring job it was too,” Dougal added reflectively, scraping a bit of mud from his boot heel.  “I’d as soon swive a warm bowl of milk pudding.”

“And did you tell Colum that?”  I asked.  Hearing the edge in my voice, he looked up.  He regarded me levelly for a moment, then a faint smile lightened his face.

“No,” he said quietly.  “No, I didna tell him that.”  He looked down at his hands, turning them over as though looking for some secret hidden in the lines of his palms.

“I told him,” he said softly, not looking at me, “that she was tender and sweet as a ripe peach, and all that a man could want in a woman.”
